Recent science and engineering innovations are increasingly becoming data-intensive and use workflows to automate integration and analysis of voluminous data to test hypotheses. Particularly, the workflows require fast and secure access to: big data archives, heterogeneous software and cloud/edge computing resources. In addition, deriving critical insights from the big data requires knowledge discovery techniques that identify latent topic associations within a domain, or even across domains. As a result, there are major challenges that need to be overcome for principled cyber and software automation approaches to data-intensive analytics using systematic integration of cyberinfrastructure technologies. In this talk, I will present our efforts on developing recommender systems equipped with intelligent agents to help decision makers of real-world applications to significantly improve efficiency and effectiveness of their workflow operations initially through automation, and ultimately through autonomous operation. I will conclude the talk with case studies involving integration of our recommender systems with intelligent agents within bioinformatics and advanced manufacturing domains, and demonstrate how our approaches can spur high-productivity and interdisciplinary collaborations to create transformative scientific breakthroughs that greatly benefit our society.
