With the current focus on the electrical power transmission grid, there has never been a better time to be a problem solver in this industry. After decades of relatively modest growth, the transmission sector is experiencing unprecedented demand driven by decarbonization, electrification, data centers, renewable energy, energy storage, aging infrastructure, and new technologies. The result is a rapidly changing industry with tremendous opportunities for engineers and other technical professionals.
In this talk, I will discuss some of the major forces driving changes in the electrical power transmission grid, some of the solutions applied, and explore some of the unintended consequences of these solutions. We will look at how engineers are being called upon to solve increasingly complex problems while balancing reliability, efficiency, cost, and the need to rapidly expand the grid.
I will also share some lessons learned from a career spanning engineering, technology development, product management, business development, and leadership in a large global corporation. The discussion will include practical advice on building and managing a successful engineering career, navigating a large corporate environment, and turning technical expertise into opportunities for leadership and innovation.
Dan Korot is a recently retired engineer and business leader from GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business. During his career, Dan held positions ranging from Design and Manufacturing Engineer to Engineering Manager, Business Development Manager, Product Line Manager, Commercial Manager, and Business Leader.
Dan spent much of his career working in flexible AC power transmission systems (FACTS), focusing on grid stability, reliability, and efficiency. His career provided him with experience across engineering, manufacturing, technology development, project management, and business leadership. He is also the holder of five U.S. patents resulting from his work in the power systems industry.
Dan is a graduate of GE’s Executive Leadership Program, a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, and a Certified Project Manager. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Union College and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.
