Shiuli Subhra Ghosh, a graduate student in the ECSE Department, won the "2024 Best Poster Award" at the "2024 Electric Transmission Graduate Summer Intern Report Out," where she presented the work she carried out during her internship through her poster titled "Hierarchical Load Forecasting."
Shiuli took part of Dominion Energy's graduate intern program, where she worked together with Bhawuk Luthra and Dr. Chetan Mishra of the Engineering Analytics and Modeling team on load forecasting. Data centers are major customers of Dominion Energy, and their electrical power consumption requires careful planning, that otherwise can put the grid at risk of instability. Therefore, load forecasting at each and every level of the power grid's hierarchical electrical architecture becomes significant while it comes to planning at area level, substation level and transformer level. During her internship, Shiuli focused on multiple algorithms of solving the forecast incoherency at each level of hierarchy. The solution involves forecast reconciliation, which empirically proved to be valuable in the Dominion Energy Electric Transmission System.
Every year, Dominion Energy receives graduate students to take part on their graduate intern program. This has given RPI graduate students the opportunity to work on hands-on real-world problems faced by their power grid, while giving Dominion the opportunity to recruit from our students in ECSE. A recent example is Fernando Fachini, who graduated in Spring of 2024, and joined the Electric Transmission Planning and Strategic Initiative team. Shiuli's internship and that of past RPI Interns shows how valuable it is for RPI to foster its collaboration with Dominion Energy to provide our graduate students the opportunity to participate in their internship programs and to explore employment opportunities.
Congratulations Shiuli!
