Dr. Bantval Jayant Baliga '71, '74 is the Winner of the 2024 Millennium Technology Prize for his innovation that has enabled dramatic reduction in worldwide electrical energy and petrol consumption.
The award recognizes Baliga’s leadership in the invention, development, and commercialization of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). Since its development in the 1980s, the IGBT has been the most important semiconductor device for making electrical energy use and petrol consumption more efficient and less polluting during the last 40 years.
In October 28-30, 2024, an RPI-HVCC Semiconductor Scholar, Andrew Lee, participated in the 2024 Microelectronics Commons Annual Meeting and NSTC Symposium held in Washington, D.C. With aspirations to become an industrial/supply chain engineer, Andrew Lee learned how his interests intersect with the semiconducto
Alex Derrickson '20 was recognized as part of the GlobalFoundries (GF) Master Inventor Class of 2024 during the 2024 GF Patent Week. As the highest honor of inventorship at GF, the title of Master Inventor is reserved for GF employees with at least 20 issued U.S. patents and who have a demonstrated track record of technical accomplishments and intellectual property (IP) asset creation.
Long-time ECSE faculty Dr. Partha Dutta, now an emeritus professor, is leading a project to grow semiconductor crystals in space on board the International Space Station (ISS). The semiconductor crystal manufacturing experimental payload was launched on the SpaceX-31 commercial resupply mission on November 4, 2024, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The payload is for the production of a novel class of Semimetal-Semiconductor Composite Bulk Crystals. The investigation will be conducted in the NASA-owned Solidification Using a Baffle in Sealed Ampoules (SUBSA) furnace.
The Douglas A. Mercer '77 Innovation and Exploration Laboratory (Mercer XLab) officially re-opened on September 25, 2024, after a year-long renovation. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by the student project showcase and a panel discussion.
The ECSE Department at RPI welcomes a new Assistant Professor, Dr. Ish Jain, starting from Fall 2024.
Glory Justin, a graduate student in the ECSE Department, won the " Best Student Paper Award" at the IEEE International Conference on Power Systems and Electrical Technology (PSET), held in Tokyo Japan on August 5-8, 2024. Her paper titled "Graph Neural Networks for Power System Security Assessment" details how graph neural networks can be used to detect unstable operating conditions in the electric power grid.
Gregory Reid Wiseman received his Bachelor of Science (1997) degree in Computer and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his Master’s degree in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2006. He became a naval aviator in 1999 and graduated from the Naval Test Pilot School in 2004. He was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 2009 and flew to the International Space Station in 2014.
Shiuli Subhra Ghosh, a graduate student in the ECSE Department, won the "2024 Best Poster Award" at the "2024 Electric Transmission Graduate Summer Intern Report Out," where she presented the work she carried out during her internship through her poster titled "Hierarchical Load Forecasting."
