Before transferring in a course, you should always make sure to talk to your faculty adviser or ECSE Undergraduate Student Coordinator, Dr. Rama Hamarneh (ramah@rpi.edu) to ensure that the course fits into your degree plan and that you are able to transfer in the course.
Step 1) Look for a course at another institution.
- You need to find the course, look at local colleges or ones local to home.
- You can view the transfer credit guide to see what courses have previously been accepted.
NOTE: Even if a course is in the guide, you still need to have it approved by the relevant dean/department.
If the course is less credits than the course is at RPI for a named major required course (example, you transfer in MATH 2400 for 3 credits, instead of 4 credits) you will need to make up that credit during the remainder of your time at RPI in order to complete your degree.
Step 2) Fill out the transfer credit form.
The most up to date version of the transfer credit form (and all RPI forms) can be found on the Registrar’s Website.
Step 3) Get Assoc. Dean approval for the course you’d like to transfer in
- Send a course description or syllabus, along with the transfer credit form to the relevant school
- NOTE: This is not the department you are studying in, this should go to the department the course is in. Example: A Math course would need to be approved by School of Science, an ENGR course by School of Engineering.
Approval Contacts:
- School of Engineering: Dana Chichester (chichd@rpi.edu)
- School of Science: scienceHUB@rpi.edu
- HASS: HASSInfo@rpi.edu
MGMT: Kevin Fletcher: fletck3@rpi.edu
If you are not sure what school a course is in, please email Rama Hamarneh (ramah@rpi.edu) and she can direct you to the correct person.
Step 4) Obtain your adviser’s signature.
After the course has been approved by the school, send to Rama Hamarneh (ramah@rpi.edu) or your faculty adviser for adviser signature.
(Step 4.5: If the course is in your last 30 credits or you are taking more than 16 credits over the summer, send to ALAC for approval: ALAC@rpi.edu)
Step 5) Submit the form to the registrar’s office.
You can submit your form to the Registrar’s Office via their online ticketing system or by going to their window on the 2nd Floor of Academy Hall. Please note that an online submission is encouraged.
Step 6) Have your transcript sent to RPI.
After you complete the course, and earn a C or above, have your transcripts sent from the other institution directly to the RPI Registrar’s Office (not the ECSE department or your adviser). If the transcripts are being sent via email, have the form sent to: transfercredit@rpi.edu
Step 7) Check your RPI transcript to make sure the credits are applied.
Check your RPI transcript to make sure the credits are applied in about two weeks. If they are not applied, submit a ticket to Submit a request – Registrar - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (zendesk.com) and provide any emails and a copy of your transfer approval form.
